TKVR Returns 9/18. Hangover Guaranteed

August 21, 2010

Time to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of TKVR. We’ve grown the party 10x since it’s Wednesday inception at Cafe Prytania. If you haven’t been to our new indoor/outdoor location, get psyched. Here’s a couple new additions to look out for: open flames, enter through our smoke tunnel, a brand new chill zone in the back corner and a human sacrifice, among other batshit crazy ideas we’ve spent the whole summer coming up with. Can’t wait to see yall out there!

Throwback Thursday Double Feature

August 19, 2010

Since over the last few weeks I’ve been breaking Max into some of the best downtempo, super sexy house, I figured I’d dedicate this Throwback Thursday Double Feature to him.

This might not be a blast from the distant past, but Alliyah has been gone for almost 10 years… feels like it was yesterday.  Thanks to Soul Clap (and Bo Hebert for turning me onto this), Alliyah’s music has new life- and its as sensual as it has ever been.  For this weeks Throwback Thursday, I give you Alliyah “Rock the Boat,” and Soul Clap “Rock The Boat.”

Chester Lone Ranger – Boogie Dreams

August 19, 2010

Recently released on Red Bull Music Academy’s 2010 audio-yearbook, “Boogie Dreams” is a clean, futuristic reimagination of what electro could have been. Disco drums, a bubbling bass line, and tasteful vocoding add up to a moody jam that I like more with every listen. I’d never heard of Chester Lone Ranger before hearing this track – apparently a brand new cat – but I hope to see more of his production in the future. You can pick up the whole 41-track compilation entitled “Various Assets – Not For Sale: Red Bull Music Academy London 2010” absolutely free on RBMA’s website. It features the likes of Hudson Mohawke, Dam-Funk, and Modeselektor, covering a wide swath of genres from hip-hop to UK funky to the undefinably strange. Give it a listen – you won’t regret it.

The Twelves- Works For Me

August 19, 2010

This song describes soooooooo many of the nights I did not had this summer. Instead I worked my ass off, made tons of homies and saw music. It’s no Thong Song, but hey it’s good. The Twelves are not only rocking singles though, they have countless remixes from La Roux to Two Door Cinema Club. Check em out.

Putsch ’79 – Asian Girls

August 17, 2010

Chinese Lovers

Really been feeling the electro vibes lately. This single from Finnish producer duo Putsch ’79 captures the feeling of that time period towards the end of disco’s heyday when all the best ideas from electro hip-hop and funk were being combined in a pure manifestation of  boogie rooted to the four-to-the-floor drum beat. Unlike their name suggests, Putsch ’79 didn’t start making music until the 2000s, but their retro sound has me fooled. And the best part? The song is all about how much they love their Asian chicks.

Catz ‘n Dogz- I’m The One Whos Crazy

August 17, 2010

Here’s a nice dose of creaky techno to start your week off right.  Hailing from Poland, Catz ‘n Dogz have been turning out some of the most original tracks electronic music has to offer in recent months.  Its like they are operating from somewhere other producers have yet to discover.  Their editing is precise, their beats are abstract, the product is artistic AND danceable.  “I’m the One Who’s Crazy,” the first track to be released from their album “Escape From Zoo,” due out on Mothership in September, is an absolute destroyer.   Check it out and then go HERE to preview the rest of the album.

Dale Jacobs- Almost Home

August 16, 2010

Dale Jacobs “Almost Home” closes out his 1978 mediocre jazz fusion record ,”Cobra”. The song is a journey to something great, somewhere that Jacobs finds comfort in.”Almost Home” ends prematurely, after only two minutes, and we’re left wanting more. Maybe Jacobs never finds home. I feel like I am always close to home. The ending to my journey was untimely as well.

Burnt Island Casuals

August 15, 2010

These guys are nothing new… . Graeme Clark, akaThe Revenge (aka 6th Borough Project, Deportivo Street Team, OOFT Music, The Hong Kong Micros, Grizzle and Cronk Family Enterprises) and DJ Harri, aka The Pa Pa Washington Trio (aka Daddy’s Favourite, H Foundation) have been around forever.  Whether you’ve realized it or not, these guys have been cranking out some of the best burnt, post-house edits you’ve listened to over the last several years  (here’s looking at you chill-wave).

The end of this spring saw them together again under the moniker Burnt Island Casuals- the result was “Scotch Hop,” an EP that captures a more soulful side of dance music.  “Truth and Temptation” is a real show stopper.  Trust your b-sides.

Check em out.

Sharkslayer-Who Is He

August 13, 2010

Just the name Sharkslayer makes you think that his music is going to be that hard, repetitive, industrialized dubstep crap we’ve herd over and over again for the last year. Though thats where you would be wrong, this is instead a great homage to your seal eating friends who kept me company for the last week (AHH SHARK WEEK YOU THE BESTTT). The only thing I can picture while listening to this track (as you’ve notice most of my posts are about what my twisted brain is thinking during the duration of a track) is that damn Dodo bird from the Looney Tunes bopping around hangin with Bobby Womack.

Mandré- Opus VI

August 13, 2010

This song is full of mystery, allure and funk. Mandré “Opus VI” has many similarities to the run of the mill Harold Faltermeyer soundtrack hit but something about this song stands out. There is a vibe that Faltermeyer never could quite produce. It is probably the accent on the E that gave Mandré his supreme musical talents.
